The Beginning of March with A Little Bit of Winter and Happy Easter

The end of February brought us a little snow in Charlotte and a whole lot
in other areas of the South and the East. Schools were closed for a week
with this little bit of snow and the frigid temperatures. Only in the South!
There were some mission car accidents because of slick roads
but no one was injured! Thank goodness!

Some things can't wait a minute longer!
Tom is concentrating so hard to help his wife and he did a wonderful job!
This "selfie" is my way of saying Thanks to my wonderful companion.

Elder and Sister Hunt went with us to Guilford to help vacate Elder and Sister Reidhead's
apartment so the Guilford Sisters Gunther and Dahle could move in.

Elder Rasmussen and Elder Toki, Guilford Elders were a great help!

Elder Hunt

and Elder Urban wrestling the washer and dryer.

Elder Rasmussen and Elder Toki are MASTER MOVERS and PACKERS.
We didn't think they could get all the furniture in the trailer BUT the Elders
said their Tetris skills made this packing possible!

Elder Smith and Elder Mastin in Reedy Creek Ward

We took a desk to the Sharon Sister Training Leaders,
Sister Rifleman, Sister Kronmiller and Sister Scott

then on to Fort Mill where we moved Elder Carson and Elder Sherman
into a new apartment in the newly created Fort Mill 2nd Ward.
Elder Abbott, Elder Sherman, Elder Urban, Elder Harrison and Elder Carson

then on to Catawba to deliver a bed for Elder Gregory.
The Catawba Elders just moved within the same complex to a 2 bedroom apartment.
Did I mention it's on the 3rd floor!
Elder Abbott, Elder Kenney and Elder Hurst

There is so much to "catch up" on but no time to do it.
April is almost here and Transfers begin tomorrow through Wednesday!
Perhaps next Sunday after General Conference there will be time for more....

Did I mention that we are so excited because Doni and her friend
will be coming to visit this week?!

We wish you a joy filled Easter week. How blessed we are to have
General Conference on Easter Sunday as we celebrate the Resurrection of
our Savior, Jesus Christ. He is my Redeemer. I know that He Lives!
I know that His Love and Light will bless each of us
with peace and joy as we Follow Him.

Because He Lives

Miracle Conversion Story

The Thomas Family

We met Barry and Christy Thomas last night, February 21st
at the office. We had gone back there Saturday night
to do some "catch up" after a very busy transfer.
They saw our car in the parking lot and were looking
for a ward to attend today. They live in Hendersonville, NC
and had come to Charlotte for their daughter, Faith. Faith had interviews
at Queen's University in Charlotte for scholarships.
She was accepted there after she graduates from high school this year.
She also applied at BYU but is waiting to hear if she was accepted.
During our conversation, they mentioned that they were converts to the church.
I was prompted several times to ask them about their conversion and
when I did ask, I heard this amazing story that I never want to forget.
I'm telling this from my memory as best as I can, with permission from Christy.

In 2001 when Faith was 3 years old, she began having a vivid recurring dream.
In the dream a kind man dressed in white with no feet (she couldn't see his feet),
was holding a golden book with "scribble scrabble" on it.
Faith loved books and begged Him to read it to her,
but He said he couldn't. Her mommy and daddy had to read it to her.
When she woke up she insisted her parents find the book and read it to her.
They searched through all their children's books,
even thinking it could be one of the golden story books.
They would hold each book up one at a time and she would cry
because none of them was the golden book.

This same dream would happen over and over again,
except when she cried because "He couldn't read the book...
her mommy and daddy would have to,"
she noticed that the Man visited her wearing a blue shirt and
had the same color hair as Faith. That's all she could remember.

Christy and Barry prayed for answers for their daughter.
They thought about taking her to a child psychologist.

They kept praying.

Someone suggested that Faith draw a picture of her dream.

Christy shared this picture with me today. It was drawn in March 2001 by Faith
Barry and Christy met the LDS missionaries many months later and as they
were taught about Joseph Smith's First Vision and about the gold plates,
they knew that this was the answer to their prayers.
They knew that this book was the golden book Faith had been dreaming about!
The Thomas family attended their first LDS church meeting
in April 2002. They were baptized in May 2002.
Christy said, "After we stepped out of the waters of baptism"
we were given a golden Book of Mormon.
She said it was a "Confirmation, a beautiful and precious thing."
She continued, "I'll never forget Faith's eyes and as if she was getting a present,
saying 'Mommy,, you found the book. Did that man give it to you?'
Barry and I cried..Faith was ready to go home
because mommy and daddy needed to start reading it."
They tried to explain to her that they'd been reading a "blue Book of Mormon
but she wanted the golden one with the black scribble scrabble."

Christy sent me these photos of the Golden Book of Mormon
they were given after they were baptized.

There is much more to this story that we'll be able to read in the Ensign one day.
I feel so privileged to be permitted to share this much with you.

I have felt an eternal connection with Christy and Barry.
They have already touched my heart deeply!

Last Sunday, they came to our Harrisburg Ward and worshipped with us.
It was wonderful to be with them.

Barry              Christy                Colby                 Faith
"We felt truly blessed to share our spiritual testimony of how Heavenly Father used our little girl
to get our attention and prepare us for what I had been praying for----the truth".
                                                                                                                          Christy Thomas

We found out this morning that Faith was also accepted to BYU!
I know what I'm hoping for......

We had a beautiful Fast and Testimony Meeting today.
Many small children bore simple Spirit filled testimonies
of the Savior and of the Book of Mormon. I reflected on how
the Lord is preparing these little ones to lead us. I thought of Faith
and of her wonderful believing parents who were being prepared
for the truth of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I'm so grateful to know them.
This experience was a gift...a Tender Mercy!

Sending our love to y'all!

January in the Mission

Senior Missionary Couples Retreat

January 14-15, 2015

The highlight for our New Year was the time we had together as Senior Missionaries
with President and Sister Craven. For me, it was a time of renewal,
a time for filling my lamp with oil. I felt like my light
was a little brighter because of the time we spent together.
Wednesday night we had dinner, then went to the Mission Home for training.
Elder and Sister Andrus led a discussion about  "Grandparenting ideas"
that can strengthen our families. We even shared ideas about our love, Family History!

President Craven is always on the phone!

Thursday morning we gathered together again and the Reidheads led a discussion
about Best Practices for us as Senior Missionaries in the Mission. It was great!

We had delicious soup, sandwiches and amazing cookies for lunch at the Mission home.

The couples in our mission are Elder and Sister Hunt who work with us in the Mission Office.
Elder and Sister Slade are Employment Specialists and are assigned to
the Lancaster Branch in Charlotte South Stake.
They are also a great help to us in the office.
We are neighbors with the Hunts and Slades
at Barrington Place Apartments so we see each other often
and have Family Home Evening on Friday nights!
Elder and Sister Andrus came back to our mission as MLS missionaries
(Member Leadership Support) and work in Reedy Creek Ward, Charlotte Central Stake.
Elder and Sister Reidhead are MLS missionaries in Guilford Ward, Greensboro, NC.
Elder and Sister Klinker are MLS missionaries in North Wilkesboro Ward, Hickory Stake.

Billy Graham Museum

We drove to the Billy Graham Museum Thursday late afternoon for a wonderful tour.
You can imagine what an impact of 14 LDS Senior Missionaries had on the staff!
They were gracious and gave us VIP treatment including a beautiful book
about Billy Graham's life and ministry. It was an uplifting afternoon.

Billy's wife Ruth is buried in the gardens at the Museum.
Billy is still alive but will be buried there also.

Hunts, Slades, Andrus, Cavens, Reidheads, Klinder, Urbans (in back)

Dobson Ward Elders Valgardson, Brogdon and Craig doing their silliest pose.

Friday Night Dinner out with the Slades and the Hunts.

Phase 10 at the Slades Apartment

Too much partying!

We picked up the Lincolnton Elders Hanks and Turnbow
to help us vacate the other Lincolnton apartment that closed in Denver.

Elder Turnbow and Hanks outside the closing apartment in Denver, NC.

These two valiant missionaries had done a great job cleaning this apartment before we got there!
It made moving so nice! Bless their hearts!
We took them out to lunch but I can't find the picture.

Elder Urban and his Valiant Companion (Not Me, the vaccuum)who sucks up the filth of the world.

Gastonia Elders getting 4 new much needed beds!
Morrow, Burrup, Summerhays, Cogswell and Simpkins

University City Elders West, Ashcroft, Flores and Felger in the Mission Office

University City Sisters Scott and Knudsen

Our Harrisburg Elders, Lyman and Kristensen

Danville Ward's Sister Tenney , Sister Dahle and Sister Pace from Guilford
at MLC (Mission Leadership Counsel)

Sister Dahle forgot her name tag so she became Sister Urban for the meeting....
and NO ONE noticed!

Sister Tanner and Sister Rust needed a new phone
so we took them out to dinner before they headed back to Monroe, NC.

Piedmont Spanish Elders Amado, Prado and Coronado

Finally a bed for Elder Eaton.

Winston Salem Elders
Elder Eaton is a new Visa Waiter for Brazil.
He is blessed to be trained by 2 outstanding Zone Leaders,
Elder Evans                                            Elder Butler

We have been in many apartments in the last 13 months.
When we entered this Winston Salem apartment,
I immediately felt a beautiful warm peaceful spirit in the apartment.
The apartment was clean and well organized and I said to the Elders
that there was such a great feeling in their home.
They said it was because they had just completed a great Companionship Study.
I wish that I had been present for that study! I know the Spirit of the Lord was present there.

In one of the bedrooms, this mirror caught my eye.
What a wonderful reminder for all our missionaries!
You're A Beautiful Son (Daughter) of God!

Elder Evans is a very talented pianist also!

The Summerfield Elders helped us clean out the Summerfield Sisters apartment
that had been vacant for a transfer so we took them out to lunch.

The Hunts and the Urbans spent the night and went to church in Greensboro
because we had to pick up Sister Goodwin the next afternoon from Danville, Virginia.
She was going home to Concord, California a couple of weeks early
so that she could go with her family to Brazil to pick up her sister from her mission.
We love Sister Goodwin!

She spent her last night with the Sharon Sister Training Leaders.
Sister Treadwell (another Visa Waiter for Brazil), Sisters Kronmiller, Rifleman and Goodwin

Saying our goodbyes

Happy Birthday, Elder Dedrick with Elder Gerrard at Red Robin.

January was a month of travel to vacate apartments and take furniture
to different parts of the mission.
The next few months will see many more changes
because our number of missionaries will be reduced from 260 to 200.
That means many more apartments will be closing.
I'll be like Scarlett O'Hara and close with,
"I can't think about that right now.
I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow."

Sending our love to y'all!
